Meet Dr. Leon Herndon
About Me
Dr. Leon W. Herndon Jr. is a glaucoma specialist and ophthalmologist at Duke Eye Center. He treats adults with glaucoma, cataracts, and related conditions. His approach to patient care focuses on putting patients at ease and listening to their concerns before making treatment recommendations based on the best available literature and his extensive experience.
Dr. Herndon specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma, with particular expertise in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and combined cataract and glaucoma surgery. His clinical research aims to develop safer and less invasive surgical procedures that allow for quicker recovery. He also conducts research projects in West Africa.
A native North Carolinian, Dr. Herndon earned his medical degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and completed his ophthalmology residency there. He then completed a glaucoma fellowship at Duke University Medical Center and joined the Duke Eye Center faculty in 1996. He currently serves as Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of Glaucoma at Duke.
